Official Announcement

NASHVILLE -- State Representative Nate Steel has announced that he will seek re-election to the Arkansas House of Representatives’ newly created District 19, consisting of Howard, Pike, and parts of Hempstead and Clark Counties. Since taking office in 2010, Steel has served on the House Judiciary Committee, The House Committee on State Agencies, and the Joint Budget Committee.

Steel distinguished himself as a leading voice on issues ranging from criminal justice to agriculture and economic development. As a former Prosecutor in the 9th West District, Steel stood firmly with law enforcement in fighting measures that would weaken penalties for the production and sale of methamphetamine and other serious crimes. He sponsored and cosponsored legislation aimed at creating jobs by implementing tax cuts and exemptions, as well as easing regulatory burdens on employers.

“I’m excited by the opportunity to represent Pike and Clark counties. In addition to having many family members and friends as new constituents, this means the opportunity to represent a district with some of the State’s greatest natural resources. I look forward to working hard for this area to improve the tourism economy as well as continuing my efforts toward job creation, agriculture, and making sure area seniors have the resources they deserve.”

Term-limited State Rep. Randy Stewart of Kirby had this to say about the announcement: “I feel confident that Rep. Steel will represent my former constituents very well since redistricting has combined most of my old district with Howard County. Nate was my seatmate during the 2011 General Session and we worked closely on constituent services. I know that he will continue to provide support to the residents of this district and to secure the funding for the many grants requested by organizations throughout the district.”

Steel practices law in Nashville with his father, George Steel, jr. He is the son of George and Becky Steel, and the grandson of the late Jetty Steel and the late Congressman Boyd Tackett. In addition to serving as State Representative for District 21, he serves as Vice President of the Cossatot Community College U of A Foundation Board of Directors, the Howard Memorial Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, and the CASA for Children Board of Advisors.

Short notice here, but anyone in the area should drop by the Carter-Day Center in Nashville tomorrow. The Howard County Health Improvement Coalition will be hosting a town hall beginning at 10:00 a.m. I will be speaking on the issue of Social Hosting law in Arkansas -- specifically criminal and civil liability for serving alcohol as a social host.
